The Lee Memorial Health System Foundation is proud to welcome Elwood “Skip” Leonard as its new Chief Foundation Officer. Leonard will lead all aspects of the Foundation including strategic planning and development to expand and enhance the role of philanthropy in fundraising endeavors which support Lee Memorial Health System and its mission to address the health needs of the community.
“When Sharon MacDonald relinquished her responsibilities earlier this year, we knew it wouldn’t be easy to find someone to fill her shoes,” says Jim Nathan, President of Lee Memorial Health System. “We are excited to welcome Skip and confident that he will continue to build upon the strong foundation Sharon and her team have developed. Skip is a seasoned leader worthy to continue the legacy of the Foundation staff and Board as well as the impressive support we have received from community.”
Leonard most recently lead the Office of Development and Alumni Relations for Dartmouth-Hitchcock and the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth, where he was responsible for all philanthropic activities of the Joint Development Office for the combined $2 billion health system, including a $1.2 billion combined endowment.
Under Leonard’s leadership, his team broke all giving records in fiscal year 2014 with $70 million in cash and pledges and is now involved in planning a $600 million campaign focused on population health. He also led the integration of fundraising activities for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth into the Joint Development Office; implemented a new comprehensive Grateful Patient Program; and formalized physician-philanthropy collaboration through a Partners in Philanthropy Program. Previously Leonard served in various leadership positions in health care, education and government.
Leonard earned an undergraduate degree in political science from Ohio Wesleyan University, a graduate degree in urban management from the University of Kansas and a second graduate degree in public administration from Harvard University. He has also completed the Harvard University Senior Executive Program and is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).
Leonard was born and raised in Rhode Island. He and wife, Julie, an attorney, have two children.
Leonard began his new duties on September 17.
