Healthy Lee Plans Interactive Town Hall Meetings for Community Input

Your input is vital; Healthy Lee —Lee County’s community collaborative focused on improving the overall health and well-being of our community—is planning four town hall meetings to better understand the health and wellness needs and concerns of our community . Bring your smartphone to one of the four meetings and provide your insights and recommendations to help our community get healthier in the next 10 years.

In 2007, Lee Health (formerly Lee Memorial Health System) recruited and convened 38 community leaders to help improve the health of our residents and improve the health care delivery system in the community. Executives representing business, education, social services, government agencies, congregations, and community and health care organizations started meeting as the Community Health Visioning 2017 Steering Committee. Chaired by a local business CEO, and supported by Lee Health, they engaged 4,000 people in surveys, focus groups, and town hall meetings to establish a baseline of community health and agree on priorities for improving it. The vision through 2017, focused on furthering seven goals: Healthy Lifestyles, Primary Care Alternatives to the Emergency Department, Chronic Disease Prevention and Management, Behavioral Health, Public Engagement, Healthcare Workforce Shortage and Electronic Medical Records.

During the past decade, Lee County has made great strides toward the original goals. For example, childhood obesity dropped from 31.6% to 20.7% and heart disease and stroke related deaths dropped by 29%. An overview of Healthy Lee’s programs and successes from the past 10 years will be shared during the town hall meetings.

Now, with your input, it’s time to form the vision for the next 10 years. Dr. Greg Adkins, superintendent, The School District of Lee County, will host the meetings, along with members of the Healthy Lee steering committee, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the following locations:
Jan. 30 – Cape Coral High School Auditorium
2300 Santa Barbara Blvd., Cape Coral
Jan. 31 – Lehigh Senior High School Auditorium
901 Gunnery Rd. N., Lehigh Acres
Feb. 1 – Estero High school Auditorium
21900 River Ranch Rd., Estero
Feb. 2 – Dunbar High School Auditorium
3800 Edison Ave., Ft. Myers

In addition to the smartphone interaction, attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in an open mic discussion for additional comments and questions.

Information gathered from the town hall meetings will be presented at Healthy Lee’s annual steering committee meeting in June, along with results from household surveys and focus groups currently in progress.
