(Fort Myers, FL) – Edison National Bank/Bank of the Islands has been recognized by the Florida Department of Health with the presentation of the Florida Fit-Friendly Company Award.
“Worksite wellness programs are an effective way to educate and encourage individuals to make meaningful changes toward a healthier lifestyle,” wrote Florida Surgeon General & Secretary John M. Armstrong, M.D. in the award letter. “In Florida and across the country, healthier employees are more productive employees. With the dedicated leadership of organizations like Edison National Bank, Florida will continue to make progress.”
The award is part of the statewide initiative to make Florida the healthiest state in the nation. Its presentation follows the bank’s 2013 recognition as both a Gold-Level and Platinum-Level Fit-Friendly Worksite by the American Heart Association (AHA) for helping employees eat better and move more. That dual recognition is rarely bestowed and was regarded as a high honor by AHA.
“Physical activity and employee wellness are important priorities in all of our offices. We are honored and excited to be recognized by the State of Florida for our ‘A Better Way to Wellness Program’, which sets forth the bank’s wellness initiatives. Our employees have become very health-conscious and embrace working as a team on health challenges such as weight loss, healthy eating, and physical fitness,” said Edison National Bank President Robbie Roepstorff.
The bank’s management was motivated to launch its workplace wellness initiatives upon learning of the significant health challenges in the American workforce, particularly in the bank’s Lee County, Florida market. Many American adults spend most of their waking hours at sedentary jobs. The lack of regular physical activity, in addition to poor diet and smoking, raises the risk of serious medical problems, such as obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. Edison’s management believes change only comes from business leaders “walking the walk” to encourage employee wellness.
Edison National Bank is Lee County’s oldest locally owned and managed community bank, serving individuals and business owners with two offices in Fort Myers, as well as the Bank of the Islands offices on Sanibel and Captiva. Founded in 1997, Edison National Bank is strongly rooted in the community and actively supports civic and charitable causes through both donations and volunteerism.
